Los Angeles Mayor Wants Film Back in L.A. November 4, 2009 | QFS Report 5:38 p.m.
L.A. Mayor Antonio VILLARAIGOSA wants to dim the dwindled forge of local film production in Los Angeles, CA. Nothing new - except Villaraigosa’s latest plan: make it easier again for prod. companies to film in the area without the standard city bureaucratic tape.
Commanding L.A. city departments create ‘contacts’ within their infrastructures, the Mayor hopes to coordinate a production force of L.A. production companies, and increase the city’s scarce revenue.
QFS Report Six:
Mayor Villaraigosa requested the Los Angeles City departments identify buildings, lots, parks and commercial spaces local production companies can snap up - the local agencies include Department of Transportation and Department of General Services, Port of Los Angeles and the Department of Water and Power.
[Hiddden Six: The Los Angeles, Department of Water and Power building has been the source of many motion picture and tv production, including, this favorite televison series.]
What you should know:
FilmL.A., Inc. the base of recording for location permit filming, has reported a steady decline of California’s film production, referencing a loss of one third the city’s production quota (TV pilots) in just five years.
The California Film Commission , listed reports the state’s share of U.S. feature film production sliced to one half it’s peak in ‘06.
QFS Report Six Squared:
The L.A. City Council is in talks toward offering tax refunds to production companies and tax credits to building owners who offer their locales for filming. This would include power nodes in downtown Los Angeles to assist film productions with saving revenue, reducing the need for portable generators and lowering the obligative production noise in local downtown regions.
Talks between the Mayor and City Departments have similar to plans the state Governor, Arnold SCHWARZENEGGER has held to bring back filming to California.
The Other Six: How long production companies will have to wait before they can make use of the planned ‘incentives ‘ - is anybody’s guess.
